8240 Matisse           Discovered 1973 Sept. 29 by C. J. van Houten and I. van Houten-Groeneveld on Palomar Schmidt plates taken by T. Gehrels.
Henri Matisse (1869-1954) studied at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. After traveling through Europe and the Pacific islands, he initially developed an Impressionistic style of painting. Later he became the leader of a new school, Fauvism, characterized by bold use of color and distorted forms.
