Discovered 1960 Sept. 24 by C. J. van Houten and I. van Houten-Groeneveld on Palomar Schmidt plates taken by T. Gehrels.
This Hungaria planet is named after the Indonesian island Krakatau that partly collapsed beneath the sea in 1883 during one of the largest volcanic eruptions in historic times.
