In the Hawaiian language Ka`epaoka`\=awela means the mischievous opposite-moving companion of Jupiter, evoking the image of a retrograde object of unknown origin. He hoa h\={o}k\={u}na`i `e`epa no Ka`\=awela e holo `\={e}ko`a ana ma ka poe l\=a. Name conceived by A Hua He Inoa, `Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai`i.
