24709 Mitau           Discovered 1991 Aug. 6 by E. W. Elst at the European Southern Observatory.
Mitau is the ancient name of the Latvian city of Jelgava. It grew around a fortress established by Livonian Knights in the thirteenth century. In 1561 the city became the residence of the dukes of Courland.
