Hermann Karl Bleibtreu (b. 1933), professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of Arizona, as dean of the college of liberal arts supported formation in 1972-1973 of the department of planetary sciences as the teaching organization associated with the university's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory.
