David Hilbert (1862-1943), professor at Göttingen and one of the greatest mathematicians of all time, exerted a profound influence on the development of many branches of mathematics in the twentieth century: the foundations, geometry, algebra, analysis. His name is associated with the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space.
