8444 Popovich           Discovered 1969 Oct. 8 by L. I. Chernykh at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory.
Pavel Romanovich Popovich (b. 1930), a Soviet cosmonaut and specialist in space engineering, participated in the flights of Vostok 4, Soyuz 14 and Salyut 3. He was the first person admitted to the cosmonaut detachment in 1960 and one of the first six candidates selected for training for the first space flights.
