API VERSION: 1.2 API SOURCE: NASA/JPL Horizons API ******************************************************************************* Revised: Feb 18, 2021 Mars 2020 (Perseverance & Ingenuity) -168 https://mars.nasa.gov/files/mars2020/Mars2020_Fact_Sheet.pdf https://mars.nasa.gov/files/mars2020/MarsHelicopterIngenuity_FactSheet.pdf MISSION LAUNCH DATE: MARS LANDING: Jul 30, 2020 11:50 UTC (in flight) Feb 18, 2021 LAUNCH VEHICLE: Atlas V-541 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, USA BACKGROUND: This mission carries the Perseverance rover and Ingenuity Mars Helicopter Landing site is an ancient river delta for a lake that once filled Jezero Crater (but is now dry). Sky-crane descent system. PERSEVERANCE ROVER Dimensions: 3 m long, 2.7 m wide, 2.2 m tall (similar to Curiosity) Mass : 2015 kg (126 kg heavier than Curiosity) Power : MMRTG (thermoelectic generator) Navigation: New Terrain Relative Navigation system Science Objectives * Look for habitability: Identify past environments capable of supporting microbial life * Seek biosignatures: Seek signs of possible past microbial life in those habitable environments, particularly vertain types of rocks known to preserve signs of life over time * Cache samples: Collect core rock and "soil" samples and store them on the Martian surface * Prepare for humans: Test oxygen production from the Martian atmosphere INGENUITY (MARS HELICOPTER) This experimental autonomous aircraft, carried to Mars attached to the belly of the Perseverance rover, will test powered flight in the thin Martian atmosphere, which is about 1% as thick as Earth's, or comparable to an altitude of 100,000 feet on Earth. Counter-rotating blades spin at 2400 rpm. Equipped with computers, navigation sensors, internal heaters, and two cameras (color and black-and-white), this engineering test aircraft will provide information to inform decisions on small helicopters for future Mars missions. Dimensions: 0.49 meters (~19 inches) Rotor span: 1.2 meters (~4 feet) Mass : 1.8 kg Power : solar, self-recharging After receiving commands from Earth, relayed by Perseverance rover, the test flight(s) are performed without further real-time input. SPACECRAFT TRAJECTORY: Post-launch fit to tracking data. Trajectory starts about an hour after launch, after probe separation.
