API VERSION: 1.2 API SOURCE: NASA/JPL Horizons API ****************************************************************************** Revised: Oct 12, 2026 Danuri / KPLO Spacecraft (Moon) -155 https://www.kari.re.kr/eng/sub03_07_01.do BACKGROUND: The KPLO (Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter) mission, renamed Danuri prior to launch, is South Korea's first lunar mission. It is developed and managed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). LAUNCH Nominal launch occurred 2022-Aug-4 @ 23:08 UTC on a Falcon-9 v1.2 (Block 5) from Cape Canaveral (SLC-40). After launch, it was placed in a 300 km staging orbit around Earth to then follow a ballistic lunar transfer to lunar orbit (BLT/WSB) via Earth-Sun L1, arriving at the Moon December 16, 2022 (UTC). MISSION GOALS: - nominal one year mission - image high interest and potential landing sites for later missions - investigate characteristics of lunar regolith - investigate characteristics of and map lunar resources including minerals and rare elements - measure the strength of the lunar magnetic field - image permanently shadowed regions to detect seasonal changes, search for frost and ice deposits, and measure terrain inside the crater including boulder distribution SCIENCE INSTRUMENTS KPLO carries six instuments, five from KARI and one from NASA: * Lunar Terrain Imager (LUTI) will take < 5m high-resolution images of potential landing sites for later missions as well as high-interest sites * Wide-Angle Polarimetric Camera (PolCam) will acquire polarimetric images of the lunar surface (except for polar regions) with medium resolution * KPLO Magnetometer (KMAG) will measure the magnetic strength of the lunar environment up to ~100 km above the lunar surface * KPLO Gamma Ray Spectrometer (KGRS) * Disruption Tolerant Network experiment (DTNPL) will test space communications based on disruption-tolerant network technology * NASA's ShadowCam is a high-resolution camera based on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Narrow Angle Camera, but 800 times more sensitive, and will study permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) SPACECRAFT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: * Dimensions (bus) : 1.82m x 2.14m x 2.29m * Mass : 678 kg * Power : 760 W, two deployable solar panels * Propulsion : 4x30N and 4x5N monopropellant thrusters SPACECRAFT TRAJECTORY: Post-launch trajectory segments from KARI, concatenated and then merged with a longer-term prediction. Tag-up w/data through October 11, prediction thereafter.
