Additional Notes: the orbits shown in the applet are color coded. The planets are white lines, and the asteroid/comet is a blue line. The bright white line indicates the portion of the orbit that is above the ecliptic plane, and the darker portion is below the ecliptic plane. Likewise for the asteroid/comet orbit, the light blue indicates the portion above the ecliptic plane, and the dark blue the portion below the ecliptic plane.

9969 Braille           Discovered 1992 May 27 by E. F. Helin and K. J. Lawrence at Palomar.
Named in memory of Louis Braille (1809-1852), who invented the Braille language so that those who could not see could obtain knowledge and explore through the `written' word. Likewise, this minor planet provides knowledge about our universe and its origins to the people of the earth who, through Deep Space 1, are also able to explore and discover what previously they could not `see'. Name proposed by the discoverers following a suggetion by Kerry Babcock through The Planetary Society's "Name That Asteroid" contest.
