10440 van Swinden           Discovered 1960 Oct. 17 by C. J. van Houten and I. van Houten-Groeneveld on Palomar Schmidt plates taken by T. Gehrels.
Dutch physicist Jean H. van Swinden (1746-1823) was known for his contributions in the field of terrestrial magnetism in The Netherlands and for his study of the aurora borealis. He also contributed to the introduction of the metric system in Europe. The name was suggested by W. A. Fröger.
