10439 van Schooten           Discovered 1960 Sept. 24 by C. J. van Houten and I. van Houten-Groeneveld on Palomar Schmidt plates taken by T. Gehrels.
Frans van Schooten (c. 1615-1660), at the University of Leiden, wrote Exercitationes mathematicae (1657) and Geometria a Renato Des Cartes (1659-1661). A promotor of cartesian geometry, he printed the first Latin version of Descartes' La Géométrie in 1649. The name was suggested by W. A. Fröger.
